Silek Arts Festival

7 September - 30 November 2018

Padang, Bukittinggi, Lima Puluh Kota, Padang Panjang, Sawahlunto, Payakumbuh, Pesisir Selatan

The Silek Arts Festival 2018 that will be held in West Sumatra is a grand celebration for traditional martial arts. In other areas this martial art is called Pencak Silat. The word Silek is used to emphasize the aspect of self-defense and the word Mancak or Bungo Silek (flower silat) in Minangkabau language emphasizes the aspect of art and beauty.

As one of the cultural heritages of the people of Minangkabau, Silek has been a source of inspiration for the development of various genres of contemporary art. This could be seen in the Randai art performance which appeared around the year 1926 at a night market in Payakumbuh.

The Silek Arts Festival 2018 will be inaugurated in Kota Padang on September 7th, 2018 and closed in Bukittinggi on November 30th, 2018. This festival will be held in different types of locations, such as martial arts academy, traditional arenas, and modern theaters. The main attraction will be the traditional Silek which shows distinctive styles of Minangkabau, the place where remains a rare and even almost extinct Silek teaching. The presence of warriors from various countries and regions in Indonesia will complete the Silek attraction. This attraction will be held in 3 cities: Padang, Bukittinggi, and Sawahlunto. They will feature landscapes and natural environment in every city and provide an overview of the ideal Silek setting.

The Silek Arts Festival 2018 began by uncovering Silek as a unique phenomenon of the Minangkabau ethnic. This event will be enlivened by art parades as well as theater, dance, and contemporary music. This festival will be accompanied by art performances from other regions or countries that share the same passion which is to explore the martial arts tradition. The art parade will be complemented with showcase materials and workshops aimed to encourage young art performers to explore the Silek culture and to use it to create a contemporary art performance.
