The International Gamelan Festival (IGF) 2018 is an international event aimed to create a mudik or homecoming arena for gamelan groups scattered all over the world.
Homecoming is an important theme chosen for this year's IGF. The IGF invites gamelan groups who have journeyed outside of Indonesia and have gone through a development of forms, techniques, and functions. Similar to mudik, this festival will become a momentum of gathering and cultural pilgrimage. It is expected to awaken and nurture gamelan artist's memories in order to reconstruct the Indonesian gamelan ensemble's identity and aesthetic values.
It has been recorded that at least 20 gamelan groups from 10 countries will meet 41 gamelan groups from Slendro, Pelog, and Kraton. Together, they will entertain gamelan lovers of the archipelago. Other programs that will accompany this festival include international conferences, exhibitions, book launches, and the appearance of 73 gamelan groups on Solo's main street.
